Around 1.3 billion people globally were living with Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in 2023, marking a 143 per cent increase since 1990, according to an analysis published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Cases could rise to nearly 1.8 billion by 2050, driven by population growth, obesity and high blood sugar linked to lifestyle changes, with North Africa and the Middle East showing higher prevalence and the disease increasingly affecting younger adults in low- and middle-income countries.
